Grow Professionally and Personally through Continued Education

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

As a babyboomer, who didn’t complete my formal education past 2 years of college,  I continued my adult education through community college and university college courses specific to my interests, avoiding the drudgery of required courses that had nothing to do with my passions or niche.

I guess you could say, I am a life long learner of my own destiny.   What I have learned in my adult life is the importance of personal development and how essential it is for business and personal success.   So I continued to find classes specific to my needs and passions to help move forward in my business.

Recently, I completed another course called Niche Attraction Group Coaching with Cindy Schulson and Kate Williams.  In this course, I was able to get more insight into coaching and the importance of my Niche.  In this video, I share the layout of the course, what I learned and how Cindy and Kate helped me continue my education and knowledge.

May Makeover Days 10 – 14 – Twitter Overhaul

When I first began to learn the basics of Twitter, I had no idea what I was doing. Learning all the social sites at the same time created a partial setup and not really following through.  Now, several months later, I realized that my Twitter wasn’t very business oriented so I used this May Makeover opportunity to rethink my strategy and narrow my niche and followers.  So, thus began my week long journey into the unknown to research my solution to engage, syncronize, optimize and generate a following.

On Day 7 of my May Makeover, I added a few links when I first got started redoing my Twitter account.   On this post, I will go step by step in what I did this entire week.

After I uploaded my FREE theme,  I set up accounts for the following sites.

  1. I set up an account to link videos at TwitVid.com
  2. I set up an account to share my photos at TwitPic.com
  3. I plan to add some groups later so I set up grouptweet.com
  4. I plan to create polls and surveys so I set up twtpoll.com
  5. I am creating PowerPoint Presentations so I set up slideshare.net

Now it was time to set up several automated tools to help me drip my content.  I am now able to auto follow, check stats and so much more.  There are several options out there but the two I chose have been listed below.

  1. The first tool I set up was socialoomph.com
  2. The second tool I set up was hootsuite.com

There is a third tool that you can use for automation.  All you do is add your twitter name and password at twuffer.com

I realized I still had a lot of work to do so I decided to check my statistics by learning from 2 more tools.

  1. With twitteranalyzer.com, you can get all the statistics on your account and your tweets to see who is rting as well as having access to the graphs.   All you do is all your user name to enter the site.
  2. Real time stats, campaigns and more are offered on this extensive social media tool called objectivemarketer.com

Here is a list of Local Tweet tools to help you find tweeters locally.

  1. This tool is the online yellow pages for Twitter @ Twellow.com
  2. This tool allows you to add your location & interests @ wefollow.com
  3. Find and get found locally @ localtweeps.com
  4. Find  local neighborhood businesses @ tweetslounge.com
  5. Search local bios and their locations @ localfollow.com

Now the work begins.  My daily goal spent on Twitter will start at 30 – 60 minutes per day until I can get a real handle on the tools.  My ultimate goal will be 15 – 30 minutes per day added into my daily work plan.

If you liked this post, please share it on Twitter by clicking the Tweet button on the top of the post.

Oh!  And don’t forget to follow me on Twitter.  See you there :-)

May Makeover Day 7 – Twitter Has Taken A Backseat; Until Now!

What's It All About?

Are you confused about the Social Media Era? Are you a Baby Boomer trying to build an online business using techniques that are outdated or a person just learning the value of Social Media?

When I signed up last year, I really didn’t understand the power of Twitter.   So one of my   goals on my May Makeover project is to revisit my Twitter account and actually learn the proper steps to marketing.    Now, as I go through my account and revisit it a few months later, I have a better understanding of it’s power and will now share with you the steps I am taking to Tweet effectively.

Throughout the next few days I will be editing, deleting and changing the settings.   I will also go through the Search options to perform a search on my niche to find people in my industry.  I will be adding tutorials and how to tips as I go through my Twitter account.

If you have a Twitter account, or have been thinking about signing up, here are a few tips to get you started.

1.  Sign up or log in at Twitter

2.  Think of a name for your account. If you are starting a business, I recommend using your real name.  This will help others find you.  If you are married and want your friends to find you,  I suggest using your maiden name also.

3.  Write your bio. If you are using Twitter for personal use, you can add some fun info.  If you are using Twitter for your business, I suggest you stand out from the crowd by creating fun tips and suggestions to bring people to your blog or landing page.   (Remember that you only get 160 characters)

4.  Upload your theme. If you have a business that you are promoting on Twitter, why not create a banner or theme that fits your companies brand?   There are many sites out there that offer FREE backgrounds, it just depends on your needs.

Here is a FREE THEME SITE that I used.

This will help you get started.  On Day 8 & 9 I will be taking some time to reflect on the upcoming Mother’s Day Weekend.  So follow me on Day 10 to learn my next step.

May Makeover Day 6 – The Tangled Web of Social Media

Where To Begin?

Are you new to the world of Social Media and don’t know where to begin.  Are you skeptical of it’s purpose and power?

Do you like to learn new techniques, skills and educate yourself with technology?

It can be overwhelming when you first get started with Facebook, Twitter, blogging, article writing and all the other aspects of Social Media.

Then, as soon as you master a technique or a skill, the site changes their terms or they reorganize their site  leaving you to re-train yourself.  I know because I have been there and done that myself and I am still learning.

Tangled Web

It can feel like a tangled web of sorts.   Where to begin, how to get started, what to say and how much privacy is at risk?  Although I began learning the art of Social Media  just a few months ago, I have more work to do in putting it all together to make it work for my business.  Therefore, I will be adding informational videos and training as I rework my Facebook and Twitter accounts next week.

So on my May Makeover moving forward, stay tuned and watch me as I teach you while I am relearning myself.

Until then, please leave comments and/or suggestions and tell me what you would like covered while I work on my May Makeover project.

Don’t forget to check out my Makeover starting on Day 1 through Day 5.

May Makeover Day 5 – Are Your Dreams Unfullfilled?

Shoe String Budget

Do you dream of owning your own business or do you have a passion that you have always wanted to turn into a business?

Maybe you don’t have any money or you have been affected by the downturn of the economy and have been laid off your job or feel like it could happen to you at any moment.  Maybe you have a family to feed, bills to pay and a mortgage on your house that isn’t paid off.

Well, this all happened to me last year and it took a great deal of courage, networking and determination on my part to find free or low costs ways to build my dream.    I couldn’t afford to go back to college in the traditional sense but I was determined to find a solution.

For the next week or so of my May Makeover, I will be sharing the Social  Media tools I used and set up to help me move forward in building my homebased business. Beware Babyboomers. – You CAN fullfill your dreams and passions and it CAN be done On a shoe string budget.

Moving forward, go to Day 6.

Please remember to leave your comments.  I would love some feedback.

May Makeover Day 4 – Adding the Facebook “Like” button to WordPress

Video Training

It is important to get your blog optimized and adding the like button has great advantages for both Facebook and your blog.

Some of the advantages for placing the “Like” button on your content include the exposure shared in  the news feed on Facebook.  When someone clicks on your profile, they will see your latest updates.

In my video, I give step by step instructions on how to add the button to your WordPress blog.  After the instructions, you will see how this will look on your Facebook profile and how it directs people back to your blog.

I hope you find it useful.  Free free to pass it along to others and if you need any help or have any questions, you can contact me here.

Stay tuned for Day 5

May Makeover Day 3 – My Inbox Has 2,450 Unread Emails

Yep, you read that right.  They just keep piling on, creating information overload.

My email “in box” has been neglected for months and the mess on my email account was as bad as the mess in my office on April 30th.   If you didn’t see the mess in my office, you can see it here.

Since part of my mission for the “May Makeover” Project was to get organized,  I declared today my official Email Makeover day.

Step #1 – I “uninstalled” all the sites that I don’t visit or don’t  need anymore.  When I first got started building my home business, I joined anything and everything looking for the right company, the right leaders, the right program and signed up for everything that could move me forward.

TIP - Don’t do that.  It only created more confusion, overload and more work to clean up afterwards.

Step #2 – I made folders for each category.   I labeled some of them as Family, Business, Webinars, Training, etc to help me find each important email much easier for me later.

Step #3 – I made a folder called “Reply to Now” and I dragged all the emails that needed my attention into that folder.  (This will help me in my daily planning)

Step #4 – All the sites I opted into to email me with comments, I changed back to “do not email me.”  For the purpose of organization plans, I can go into the site periodically to check for updates without having my “inbox” loaded with notifications.

Step #5 – I felt less cluttered and took a deep breath.   Now,  I was ready to tackle my next plan.  Stay organized!

Stay tuned for Day 4 of my “May Makeover” Project.

May Makeover

Welcome to “May 2010 Makeover”

I am so excited to be able to share my daily Makeover with you.

It was just a few months ago that I started working from home. During that time I have learned so much and have had a lot of success along the way but my days are 24/7 eating, breathing and sleeping my job.

BUT, I was struggling to organize my time and priorities. So this month I will be sharing my Makeover each day through videos, trainings and teachings.

So welcome aboard. I hope you enjoy this journey.   One more thing.   Please leave comments.  I would love to have your feedback.

May Makeover Day 2 – Are Your Body and Mind Both Healthy?

In todays video,  I share the importance of getting back in shape, both mentally and physically.   Working from home can be very rewarding but if your health suffers, so will your business.   You can become sleep deprived,  overweight and before you know it, the pounds start to take over and other health issues begin to surface.

This is why I will be implementing a daily exercise routine into my morning schedule before I start working.   I noticed that the hours turned into days and the days turned into weeks and my exercise routine had taken a back seat.

I hope you enjoy this video.  Have a great day and I will see you tomorrow.

Remember to leave your comments.   I would love to get some feedback and for you to share your home business stories.

May Makeover Day 1 – Is Your Home Office Organized?

My first Makeover today was the reorganization of my home office.  If you missed my intro video, just scroll to the bottom of this post to view it.   What a great feeling to have everything organized and at my fingertips.  Enjoy the video and I will see you tomorrow.
